See how nicely the sleeve reduced and hangs? No huge gathers to contend with.
Have you ever started a crochet pattern and NOT made the sample swatch to check your gauge? Normally I don't sweat it, I run by the seat of my pants... but this time it cost me a lot of time.
See this sweater I made my daughter? The pattern said to use a L hook, so I did. Medium 4 yarn, same... but after completing one hexagon I realized it was really big. I mean, nowhere to hide behind those huge, gaping holes, big!
Don't get me wrong. I love a quick, easy pattern as much as the next guy. But this was supposed to provide some warmth and I knew this wouldn't cut it.
So I played around with hooks until I got the correct size gauge. Turned out I needed an H. Apparently that's how loosely I crochet.
So I started the next hexagon in the H and whipped my way through that one. 17 rows, check, gauge match, check, fit on daughter, back, check, sleeve, HUGE!
So back to the drawing board I go. I decided that I'd never be able to reduce the stitches enough to taper the sleeve so I wanted to reduce while I crocheted the hexagon... this kept me up at night trying to figure what would work.
But finally I figured out something and made a new hexagon. Again (3rd time).
This time I really liked the reduction of the sleeve at the top, but the bottom seemed to grow... So I did it again and reduced that part too. (4th time)
Finally I have the finished product that I'm proud of. My daughter loves it and I did actually write down my adjustments so I might be able to do them again. Lol
I offer a custom made campfire sweater on my Etsy shop. You can choose the size and arm style. Tapered or full (70's like).

Hi, I'm Rebecca. I'm a mother of two teenagers and I just married the love of my life, their father, after 16 years apart.
As I start this new chapter in my life, working part time and being a housewife, it leaves time to do my favorite hobby. Crocheting.
I have also opened an Etsy Shop to try and sell some things I've made.
Follow me as I delve into my new life.
